Recent Social Responsibility Initiatives

The reflections of Kyosei could be prominently noticed in the way Canon addressed issues relating to the society, environment and its own product development. The company made significant efforts to contribute towards the development of the society in which it operated. For instance, in 1997, in a bid to promote education in South East Asia, Canon started a book fair where books and CDs of Canon's employees were sold at negligible prices.

The amount collected through book/CD sales was given as grants to non-profit organizations. The non-profit organizations utilized the funds to set up libraries in schools, print books and offer scholarships. In 1998, Canon instituted the 'Beijing University Canon Scholarship fund' in China, which provided financial aid to Chinese students. In Japan, Canon employees conducted donation campaigns, to provide assistance to victims of natural calamities such as floods and drought that occurred in different parts of the world. Funds collected were offered for disaster relief through the Red Cross Society in Japan. Foreign currency and postcards contributed by employees were given to the Japanese Committee for UNICEF. Proceeds from the sale of postcards were used to provide scholarships for children in Thailand and Laos.

The Japanese employees actively participated in blood donation campaigns and other social service activities. Canon Sales, a division of Canon established the 'Canon club' for people interested in learning photography.

Through its schools, also known as EOS schools, amateur photographers were taught about the basics of photography, free of cost.

The club periodically organized photo exhibitions and contests and published a photo club magazine. Canon Sales also sponsored "Kids Tennis," a tennis school for children, where world famous players coached and shared their insights in the game.

In 1999, Canon US started supporting the Harbor Branch Oceanographic Institution, in its efforts to safeguard wild dolphins, through a photo identification system, which made the use of digital imaging equipment of Canon.

Since 2001, Canon has sponsored the 'Canon Cup Junior Soccer' tournament in order to encourage youngsters take part in this country level soccer event.
